Scotland has a unique and plentiful history. The highlands were run by the clans and is now home to the majestic remains of the past. Ancient stone walls, crumbled turrets, and mighty fortresses are perched in the most picturesque landscapes. Whichever castle you visit in Scotland it will surely steal a little bit of you.
Eilean Donan Castle
If you have ever cyber-stalked Scotland, there is a high chance that you have come across a photo of the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. Its picture-perfect demeanour finds itself on the face of many postcards. I fell in love with this 13th century castle that I visited it three times. There is something captivating about the entire setting, it is no wonder so many tourists flock here. The castle itself is strategically built on its own island which overlooks the gateway to the Isle of Skye. It is the meeting point of three sea-lochs, Loch Long, Loch Alsh and Loch Duich.
Ardvreck Castle
We stumbled upon this by accident. The ruin presented itself to us. It appeared from behind the corners of the winding A837 coastline of Loch Assynt. We just had to stop to explore. Not much remains of this once-was fortress. But you cannot help but be inquisitive of the past that lingers there. Who lived here? What happened to the people of this place? Why is it no longer inhabited?
Urquhart Castle
Probably the most famous remaining castle ruins in Scotland. The ruins or Urquhart castle hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The once was largest castle in Scotland turned to rubble as an outcome to a clan conflict. The remains lie on the banks of Loch Ness. A perfect place to learn about the dramatic history of the Highlands and the clans.
Dunrobin Castle
You will find this stunning structure located in the North-East coast of the highlands. It is perched on a rock face overlooking a gigantic garden which eventually meets the sea. The pristine white walls have been well maintained in a fairy-tale fashion. Both the inside and outside are well preserved. You can take a self-guided tour through 20 fully furnished rooms. The French influenced décor is absolutely captivating. I still find it hard to believe that people once lived here.
Inveraray Castle
Yet, another fairy-tale castle. Located on its own island just off the shore of Loch Fyne. Although smaller than the previous, the wow- factor is no less. The symmetrical towers have a huge romatic impact. You can wander through the splendidly maintained rooms, then explore enchanting garden and grab some afternoon tea from the small gift shop.
Edinburgh Castle
Ofcourse, Edinburgh castle had to make a show on this list. No trip to Scotland would be complete without visiting the capital’s castle. As soon as you arrive into Edinburgh you are greeted by the huge structure that towers high above the city. To access it, climb your way to the top of the adored royal mile. The castle’s grounds are absolutely huge and are home to St Margaret’s Chapel, the national war museum and the Crown Jewels (also known as The Honours of Scotland). You can spend hours wandering the estate so I recommend visiting the royal tea room. It is a little bit pricey but it is certainly fit for a King.
